Great job on getting rid of the clothes. It sounds like you had quite a bit that wasn't working for you. As for the spending...you will probably really get great use out of those clothes for several years.
I've had this on my "list" of things to do for over a month. I think it's hardest being a woman. We have too many style choices.
That being said, I've tried to simplify my wardrobe by buying t-shirts and sweaters in black and white that can go easily with my pants. I have one pair of comfy professional shoes I wear everyday with black socks and a black leather belt. I just go to work dressed boring. It makes my choices easier in the morning and is cheaper over all.
It is hard for me to get rid of clothes, too, even once they have reached the worn out stage... but it is NOT hard for me to buy clothes! I just don't have the money now to do so, and it leads me to make do with some stuff that I'm not in love with. However, I think that you are wise to go through exactly what you want/need from the pile and return the rest. Good that you have the insurance that you can take stuff back! Where I am living right now that is a foreign concept, so if you buy it it's pretty much yours forever. Argh.
