I took Russian for a semester in college but couldn't stick it out any longer. It was too hard for me to learn a language with a different alphabet.

You are probably talking about Rosetta Stone.

Not for me either. I get rosetta stone and a number of other programs through my employer and did not like this approach at all. I tried it for Chinese. And I do have a foundation of living/studying in China for a semester, plus some classes after that.

And Russian is a challenging language when it comes to grammar. Focusing mostly on word memorization does not get you far. To be understood and speak correctly you really need to understand grammar. (that is why so many people give up).

I hope you don't give up. It is a really worthy hobby/interest - especially if you guys can do it together!

CB, a language without an alphabet is even harder.

We are in the middle of learning Bulgarian (also a Slavonic language with the Cyrillic alphabet) and it definitely leads to a challenge. There is no Rosetta Stone for Bulgarian (smaller country, less demand for the language) but I'm not sure that I would like that method either. I want the insurance of word lists that I can understand and THEN implement to understand word order, etc. I hope you stick with it and learn the language in another manner, anyway!

Oh, I'm definitely sticking with Russian. I learned it was a beautiful language while studying Russian Film one semester. I'm dying to be able to converse in it. I actually got a Russian for Dummies book that has gotten me a LOT farther than the program ever did. :-)
